The idea in everyday life
Practice correction card: the first draft’s Open studio paragraph correctly says 1: 00–3: 00 p.m.; an editor proposes a Quick details line 1: 00–2: 00 p.m. Keep the source brief’s two-hour event.
Content proofing checks facts; layout proofing checks how those facts survive formatting.
Proof content and layout separately — guided practice
Find a planted inconsistency and inspect the final pages.
Practice correction card: the first draft’s Open studio paragraph correctly says 1: 00–3: 00 p.m.; an editor proposes a Quick details line 1: 00–2: 00 p.m. Keep the source brief’s two-hour event.
1. Step 1
Compare every event detail against newsletter-copy.txt. Reject the proposed 1: 00–2: 00 p.m. line and keep 1: 00–3: 00 p.m. everywhere.
You should see: The two-hour duration is consistent throughout.
Establish the document structure.
2. Step 2
Use Edit > Find to search 1: 00 and October 17; inspect each occurrence for agreement. Run Tools > Spelling but do not accept changes to intended names blindly.
You should see: Repeated details have been reviewed.
Apply a repeatable formatting rule.
3. Step 3
Inspect both pages at 100% and Print Preview. Check headings stay with their next paragraph, no table crosses the margin, and no body text is clipped.
You should see: Both pages are readable without clipping.
Inspect the reader-facing result.
4. Step 4
Write a correction log: field, time; incorrect value 1: 00–2: 00; correct value 1: 00–3: 00; reason source brief. Save common-room-final.odt.
You should see: The final source has a traceable correction.
Preserve the source and its evidence.
What to finish
The final source has a traceable correction.
