The idea in everyday life

Use US Letter portrait pages, 0.75-inch margins, body 11 pt. The usable width is 7 inches. Page 1 stays single-column; page 2 body uses two columns with a 0.3-inch gap.

The idea

Page breaks and sections encode layout; repeated blank lines depend on fragile spacing.

Follow along

Arrange pages and columns — guided practice

Create a stable two-page layout with real page and section controls.

Use US Letter portrait pages, 0.75-inch margins, body 11 pt. The usable width is 7 inches. Page 1 stays single-column; page 2 body uses two columns with a 0.3-inch gap.

  1. 1. Step 1

Choose Format > Page Style. Set paper Letter, portrait and all margins 0.75 inches. Confirm.

You should see: The page has a 7-inch-wide content region.

    Establish the document structure.

  2. 2. Step 2

Replace NEXT PAGE with a manual page break: place the cursor before Two ways to join in and press Ctrl+Enter; delete the marker and excess blank paragraphs.

You should see: Page 2 begins at a deliberate page break.

    Apply a repeatable formatting rule.

  3. 3. Step 3

Select page 2’s three sections, excluding End of issue. Choose Insert > Section. In Columns choose 2, equal width, spacing 0.3 inches; confirm.

You should see: Each page 2 column is(7−0.3)/2=3.35 inches wide.

    Inspect the reader-facing result.

  4. 4. Step 4

Use View > Formatting Marks to inspect breaks. If more than two pages appear, remove accidental empty paragraphs first; then reduce paragraph spacing modestly while keeping body 11 pt.

You should see: The layout has two pages without stacks of empty lines.

Preserve the source and its evidence.

Now change one thing

Usable width is 6.5 inches with a 0.5-inch gap between two equal columns. What is each column’s width?

What to finish

The layout has two pages without stacks of empty lines.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Do not use repeated spaces or blank paragraphs as a layout system.

How can I tell I understand it?
