The idea in everyday life

Use the complete original copy in newsletter-copy.txt. This is a fictional issue; no event or publication is created.

The idea

Editorial hierarchy helps a reader find the main story, details and next step.

Follow along

Plan an issue people can scan — guided practice

Turn supplied copy into a two-page content map.

Use the complete original copy in newsletter-copy.txt. This is a fictional issue; no event or publication is created.

  1. 1. Step 1

Open LibreOffice Writer. Paste the supplied text as unformatted text. Save common-room-draft.odt.

You should see: The full copy is in an editable source.

    Establish the document structure.

  2. 2. Step 2

Mark the title, six section headings and event details in a separate planning note. Keep the fictional status visible.

You should see: The issue has one main title and six section headings.

    Apply a repeatable formatting rule.

  3. 3. Step 3

Assign Open studio, What to expect and Quick details to page 1; assign Two ways to join in, A small project to try and Before you arrive to page 2.

You should see: Each page has a defined content role.

    Inspect the reader-facing result.

  4. 4. Step 4

Write a three-level hierarchy: title, section heading, body. Delete the literal NEXT PAGE marker only when adding the real page break in lesson 3.

You should see: A map controls the layout before decoration.

Preserve the source and its evidence.

Now change one thing

An issue has two pages with three sections per page. How many sections are planned?
