Compare What Two Observers Could See

Explain why observations from different places may have different scope.

  • Original invented fair records, same Saturday: Jae, at the west gate, writes “I counted four bicycles beside this gate at 10 am.” Ren, at the east gate, writes “I counted two bicycles beside this gate at 10 am.” No other locations or times were counted.

Learn the idea

An observer can report only what they could see or measure. Location is part of the evidence. Two people can report different numbers without disagreeing if they looked at different places. Read the where and when along with the number before deciding whether accounts match.

Here Jae and Ren both mention bicycles at 10 am, but their gates are different. We can add four and two to describe the reported bicycles beside those two gates at that moment, assuming the separate gate areas do not overlap. We cannot call that the count of every bicycle at the fair, because other places were not observed.

  1. Name the location and time for each observer.
  2. Circle or say the two numbers.
  3. Explain the location difference in one sentence.
  4. State a narrow combined count for the two separate gate areas and name the missing coverage.
Worked example

See the method in action

“Jae reports four at the west gate and Ren two at the east gate, both at 10 am. That is six reported bicycles beside the two gates together, not necessarily six in the whole fair.”

Why do four and two not automatically contradict each other?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

They counted different gate areas.

The records concern different locations. Neither claims to count the whole fair.

Take it further

Changed note: Ren now says “two at the west gate at 11 am.” Does that automatically disprove Jae? Model reasoning: “No. The location now matches, but the time differs. Bicycles could have moved. I would need records of the same location and time to compare the same count.”
