Put Records in Time Order
Order three complete fictional observations and keep their claims narrow.
Supplied materials
- Original fictional room notebook: April 8, Ada: “I saw a red sign on the door.” April 6, Lee: “I saw a green sign on the door.” April 7, Mo: “I saw two signs on the table.” Dates are in the same month and year; these are original invented practice records.
Learn the idea
Dates help us arrange records from earlier to later. A record’s position on this page is not its time order. In one month, day 6 comes before day 7, which comes before day 8. Copy each observation with its date so its words do not attach to the wrong day.
A sequence tells us what people reported at different times, but it can leave events between those times unknown. The red sign was reported on April 8. These notes do not tell us exactly when it was placed or who put it there. We can name the last reported observation without inventing the missing steps.
- Copy or say the three dates.
- Arrange them April 6, April 7, April 8.
- Place each person’s exact observation beside the matching date.
- Say the last reported door observation and one event whose date remains unknown.
See the method in action
“April 6: green sign on door; April 7: two signs on table; April 8: red sign on door. Ada reports the red door sign on April 8. I cannot tell when the red sign was first attached.”

See the answer and explanation
Ada saw a red door sign.
April 8 is the latest supplied date. Building the room is not reported at all.
Take it further
Changed record: add April 9, Eli: “I saw no sign on the door at noon.” What becomes the latest door observation? Model reasoning: “Eli reports no door sign at noon on April 9. That does not prove there was no sign earlier that morning.”
