Ask a Question a Record Can Answer
Match a question to information supplied by a source.
Supplied materials
- Original invented meeting card: “Room club, May 2. Present: Ana, Bea, Cal. Decision: use the round table for the puzzle. Writer: Bea.” This is the entire card; it does not record a vote or anyone’s feelings.
Learn the idea
A useful question asks for information a source actually includes. “Which table did the club decide to use?” matches the card’s decision line. “Who liked the decision?” asks about feelings, which the card does not supply. We can answer one question and keep another open.
When a record names people present, it tells us who the writer recorded as attending. Presence alone does not mean agreement. The card names three attendees and one decision, but gives no individual votes. Say “the card records” when you describe its contents so your answer remains tied to the evidence.
- Find the date, attendance line, and decision line.
- Write or say one question about the decision.
- Answer it with the card’s words.
- Ask one question about feelings or votes and explain why this card cannot answer it.

“What table was chosen? The card records the round table. Did Cal like that choice? The card does not say; being present does not tell me Cal’s feelings or vote.”

See the answer and explanation
Which table did the club choose?
The decision line supplies the round table. It has no feelings, votes, or purchase information.
Take it further
Changed card: add “Vote: Ana yes, Bea yes, Cal no.” What new question can it answer? Model reasoning: “Who voted no? Cal, according to the added vote line. The vote still does not tell me why Cal voted no.”
