Compare Options Under a Stated Decision Rule

Use a fictional threshold and resource cap while keeping consultation evidence qualified.

Supplied materials

  • Original fictional planning rule, created only for this exercise: option must fit six room-hours and offer at least eight listed seats; among qualifying options choose the one with the largest number of support responses in the supplied 30-person voluntary poll. A art: six room-hours, ten seats, 16 support responses. B sport: eight hours, twelve seats, 20 support responses. C quiet workshop: four hours, eight seats, 14 support responses. People could support more than one option; poll does not represent all users.

Learn the idea

A decision rule combines constraints with a ranking criterion. Apply each required condition before comparing support counts. The highest count does not automatically win when an option exceeds the resource cap. Write the rule explicitly so the result can be checked and so a different rule is not silently substituted.

A defensible recommendation also distinguishes its evidence from broader legitimacy claims. Under this exercise’s rule, art and quiet workshop qualify, and art ranks higher on recorded support. That describes the rule’s output; it does not establish what all users prefer, whether the rule is ideal, or whether a real centre should adopt the option. Multi-select support counts may sum above thirty without contradiction.

  1. Make a table of hours, seats, and support for each option.
  2. Mark options satisfying both the cap and seat minimum.
  3. Rank only qualifying options by the supplied support-count rule.
  4. State the selected option, its tradeoff, and the voluntary poll limitation.
Worked example

See the method in action

“A and C meet both conditions; B exceeds six hours. A has sixteen support responses versus C’s fourteen, so A ranks first under the stated rule. C would use two fewer room-hours. The result uses a voluntary poll and does not establish all-user preference.”

Which choice follows the fictional decision rule?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

A, after excluding B for exceeding the hour cap.

A and C qualify, and A has the larger recorded support count. The rule uses hours as a cap, not as the ranking criterion.

Take it further

Changed cap: eight room-hours, with the same seat minimum and ranking. Model reasoning: “B now qualifies along with A and C, and twenty is the largest support count. B becomes the rule’s selection. The poll’s coverage limitation remains even though the selected option changes.”
