The idea in everyday life

It is June 7 at 14:00. Lee has assigned these callback deadlines: F5 June 7 at 13:30, no response; F6 June 7 at 16:00, no response; F7 June 8 at 10:00, no response. Policy: when an assigned deadline passes, record overdue and notify Lee through the escalation channel; do not change urgency yourself. F5’s last contact was 12:00.

The idea

A due-time comparison is an administrative check, not clinical triage.

Follow along

Escalate overdue tasks — guided practice

Use assigned deadlines to prioritize administrative follow-up.

Use a text editor, a free document editor, or paper. Start from the following fictional records; they reset this lesson even if your earlier answer differed.

  1. 1. Compare due times

Find deadlines earlier than the current time.

You should see: Only F5 is overdue.

A common reference time keeps the comparison consistent.

  2. 2. Calculate delay

    Measure from F5’s 13:30 deadline to 14:00.

You should see: F5 is 30 minutes overdue.

A precise delay is more useful than “late.”

  3. 3. Draft escalation

Include ID, due time, last contact and missing response.

You should see: F5 due 13:30; last contact 12:00; response absent at 14:00.

The clinical owner can decide the next action with relevant facts.

  4. 4. Keep future tasks visible

Retain F6 and F7 with their assigned due times.

    You should see: F6 due 16:00; F7 tomorrow 10:00.

Not overdue does not mean no follow-up is needed.

Now change one thing

Current time changes to 15:00 and F5 remains unanswered. Enter minutes past its 13:30 deadline.

Your work

What to finish

An overdue-task review and factual escalation note.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Guessing urgency from a referral’s name instead of using the clinician’s assignment.

How can I tell I understand it?

Check your result against the worked example, then explain the changed case without using an unstated assumption.

1An assigned callback is due at 11:15 and current time is 11:45. How late is it?
2A task due tomorrow has no response yet. Under a deadline-only review, which statement is accurate?
3Which escalation note is most useful?
