  • A checked gross-pay register. A gross-to-net register with separate deduction totals.
  • An employer-cost estimate with clearly labeled assumptions.
  • A reconciled payroll handoff with an error log.
  • A complete payroll practice file and documented correction request.

Review and revise

Use these criteria to check your work and choose what to improve.

  • Calculations reconcile to the supplied records, with units and dates labeled.
  • Assumptions and missing information are visible, including the changed scenario.
  • The recommendation follows the evidence and explains an important limitation.
  • The six lesson outputs form a usable handoff that another learner can check.

The idea in everyday life

Use the approved Pine records below. Fictional exercise rule: hours above 40 are paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate. This simplified rule is not a determination of real overtime eligibility.

The idea

Gross pay is earned pay before employee deductions. Apply the stated overtime rule to hours, not to the entire check.

  1. 1. Split hours

Put up to 40 hours in regular and the remainder in overtime.

    You should see: A 30/0; B 40/0; C 40/2.

Only excess hours get the multiplier.

  2. 2. Multiply regular

    Multiply regular hours by rate.

    You should see: A $480; B $720; C $800.

Keep units as dollars per hour.

  3. 3. Add overtime

    C has 2 × $20 × 1.5.

You should see: C overtime $60; gross $860.

Avoid paying all 42 hours at overtime rate.

  4. 4. Total register

    Add the three gross amounts.

You should see: Gross payroll totals $2060.

A control total supports later reconciliation.

Now change one thing

Under the same fictional rule, 43 hours at $10 gives what gross pay?
