The idea in everyday life

North Room careers showcase: public session 13:00–15:00; staff access 12:00–15:30. Venue-approved capacity is 60 visitors. There are 48 registrations. Lee is adult event coordinator and approves changes. Venue duty manager Pat owns emergency decisions. The east doorway and its approach must stay clear; check-in belongs at the west wall. No food, ticket sales or physical setup are required for this exercise.

The idea

A workable schedule starts with the limits it cannot move.

Read the event constraints — guided practice

Identify fixed limits and decision owners.

Use a text editor, a free document editor, or paper. Start from the following fictional records; they reset this lesson even if your earlier answer differed.

  1. 1. List fixed times

Write staff access, public opening, closing and exit deadline.

    You should see: 12:00; 13:00; 15:00; 15:30.

    Fixed windows constrain later tasks.

  2. 2. Check capacity

Compare registrations with approved visitor capacity.

You should see: 48 registrations; 12 spaces remain under the stated limit.

Headcounts need a limit and a clear unit.

  3. 3. Place decisions

Assign event changes to Lee and emergency decisions to Pat.

You should see: Two distinct decision owners.

A task assistant should not invent authority.

  4. 4. Record room rule

Put west-wall check-in and clear east route on the plan.

You should see: The check-in queue must not block the east route.

Operational plans include movement, not just stage times.

Now change one thing

There are 53 confirmed visitors against the same cap of 60. Enter remaining visitor capacity.

Your work

What to finish

A constraint card with times, capacity and decision owners.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Treating registration count as proof of actual attendance.

How can I tell I understand it?

Check your result against the worked example, then explain the changed case without using an unstated assumption.
