Study guide: Read Questions, Numbers and Schedules
Questions request a particular kind of information. Number words, clock expressions and date labels then communicate amounts or times; use the explicitly supplied practice records rather than a real schedule.
Ideas to explain in your own words
- Dónde asks location, cuándo time, quién a person, cómo manner/condition, por qué a reason and cuánto an amount. Direct question words carry their written accents; choosing them changes what information a reply must supply. Read the stated information type and the provided question frame.
- Sixteen through nineteen and twenty-one through twenty-nine use joined word forms. The supplied spellings retain accents in dieciséis, veintidós, veintitrés and veintiséis. From thirty, the practiced compound forms use tens plus y plus units. Use the supplied amount and choose its exact written cardinal from the offered forms.
- The conventional singular statement is Es la una for one o’clock. Other practiced hours use Son las plus the hour word. Y cuarto adds fifteen minutes and y media thirty minutes past the named hour. Read the supplied twelve-hour clock exactly.
- Spanish weekday and month names normally use lowercase inside a sentence, unlike standard English calendar capitalization. The supplied record determines which labels belong together; this is a language task, not calendar-date validation. Keep the exact weekday and month provided in the fictional practice record.
Useful vocabulary
- dónde
- Where, in a direct question.
- cuándo
- When, in a direct question.
- y cuarto
- And a quarter, for fifteen minutes past in these time statements.
- veintitrés
- Twenty-three, with its written accent.
Watch your reasoning
- Por qué in a question differs from porque introducing a because-answer. A question can be grammatically formed yet ask the wrong information. These supplied frames establish the intended type so no guess about an unknown conversation is needed.
- Do not add y inside veintitrés or lose its accent. These are fictional item counts, not prices requiring any purchase. A written number must match the actual supplied quantity; familiar spelling alone is insufficient.
- Other accurate clock expressions exist, including explicit minute counts. The offered options are designed so only one matches this exact time. Do not assume y media names twelve minutes or that singular es agrees with every hour.
- Capitalization can change at a sentence beginning or in an official name. These examples put the calendar labels inside an ordinary sentence. No year is supplied and no actual Gregorian weekday-date pairing is being claimed.
A worked review example
Choose the Question’s Information Type: The aim is to ask for a location. Complete the supplied frame ¿___ está la sala? using only the missing question expression. Candidate answers: (A) Cuándo (B) Cómo (C) Dónde (D) Quién. The requested information is a location, so the missing expression is Dónde. It directs the reply to that type of information. Preserve its written accent and distinguish a reason question Por qué from an explanatory porque. Write Supplied Cardinal Amounts: The supplied practice record contains exactly 16 items. Choose the correctly spelled standalone Spanish cardinal for 16. Candidate answers: (A) dieciséis (B) veintidós (C) veintiséis (D) veintitrés. The stated quantity is 16, whose standard standalone spelling is dieciséis. The other choices name different amounts. Preserve any accent and the joined or separated structure of the selected number. Read a Supplied Clock Time: The supplied twelve-hour clock shows 01:00. Which complete offered expression gives that exact reading? Candidate answers: (A) Es la una. (B) Son las cuatro y media. (C) Son las dos. (D) Son las tres y cuarto. 01:00 has the hour and minutes represented by Es la una. Use singular Es la at one and plural Son las for other practiced hours; cuarto means fifteen minutes and media thirty minutes. Read and Write Calendar Labels: Fictional language record: weekday lunes; month enero. Which offered sentence preserves both labels with ordinary in-sentence capitalization? Candidate answers: (A) La actividad es el Lunes en Enero. (B) La actividad es el jueves en enero. (C) La actividad es el lunes en agosto. (D) La actividad es el lunes en enero. The record supplies lunes and enero. Both occur inside the sentence and therefore stay lowercase: La actividad es el lunes en enero. Preserve the original labels rather than substitute a more familiar day or month.
