Throw with control
Coordinate grip, base, rotation, release, and follow-through for an accurate spiral.
Two-Minute Drill: Catching the Football
From USA Football. Watch here or open it on YouTube .
The featured USA Football clip focuses on catching; use it to see the target window a passer should create for a moving teammate. What this lesson is really solving.
Build a comfortable grip, sideways setup, weight transfer, elbow path, release, and follow-through at short distance. Accuracy and a catchable arc matter more than maximum force. Throw only when the partner is looking and the lane is clear.
Understand the idea before touching the steps.
The throw transfers force from the ground through the hips and torso to the arm and fingertips.
Follow these steps in order.
Take the action in each step; then use the deliverable below to prove the lesson is finished.
- 1
Use a comfortable grip on the laces with space under the palm and control through the fingertips.
- 2
Build a balanced base, align the front side to the target, and keep the ball in a compact ready position.
- 3
Step, rotate, lead with the elbow naturally, release off the fingers, and finish with the throwing hand across the body.
- 4
Train short stationary accuracy, then add drops, resets, movement, and timing with a receiver.
See the standard in context.
Morgan places fingers across the laces without squeezing, points the lead shoulder to a chest-height target 7 yards away, transfers from back to front, and finishes the throwing hand across the body. Ten throws are scored for catchable location, spiral quality, and balance.
Inspect before you move on.
- The receiver signals readiness before every throw.
- The pass reaches a safe catch window rather than merely traveling fast.
- Distance increases only after accuracy stays consistent.
Your deliverable
A 50-throw accuracy session across short targets with completion and miss direction logged.
Watch for this
Trying to throw harder with the arm while the feet and hips remain disconnected from the target.
Prove it—don’t just recognize it.
You can deliver a catchable ball repeatedly from a balanced base and reset after movement.
Quick knowledge check
Answer from the lesson—not from confidence alone. Score at least 2 of 3 to unlock completion.
