Two-Minute Drill: Catching the Football

From USA Football. Watch here or open it on YouTube .

Notice the receiver's balance before and after the catch in USA Football's drill; rehearse arriving under control before adding a ball.
Before you begin

What this lesson is really solving.

Practice athletic stance, acceleration, deceleration, cuts, backpedal, and carrying the ball away from pressure in a non-contact area. Keep the head up, avoid blind crossings, and increase speed only when stops remain controlled.

Why this works

Understand the idea before touching the steps.

Control precedes collision: posture, foot placement, vision, and deceleration protect skill and safety.

Do this

Follow these steps in order.

Take the action in each step; then use the deliverable below to prove the lesson is finished.

  1. 1

Practice balanced athletic stance, forward starts, backpedal, lateral shuffle, hip turn, and controlled stop.

  2. 2

Cut off the outside foot with lowered hips and eyes up, progressing from planned to signaled directions.

  3. 3

Secure the ball against the body with fingers over the point and change arms away from imaginary pressure.

  4. 4

Practice clean exchanges at walking speed before adding motion or defensive reads.

Worked example

See the standard in context.

Morgan completes a five-cone course at half speed: start, accelerate, settle, 45-degree cut, controlled stop, and return. With the ball, four points of pressure secure it against the body while changing hands only in open space.

Quality check

Inspect before you move on.

  • The practice lane has safe runoff and no intersecting traffic.
  • Deceleration uses several balanced steps rather than one uncontrolled plant.
  • Ball security remains intact while eyes scan forward.
Make it real

Your deliverable

A non-contact movement and ball-security circuit completed with zero dropped exchanges.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Adding full speed or contact before players can stop, redirect, and protect their head and ball position.

You’re ready when

Prove it—don’t just recognize it.

You can change direction under control and keep secure possession through a sequence.
