Two-Minute Drill: Catching the Football

From USA Football. Watch here or open it on YouTube .

In the catching drill, study the receiver's break and sight line; use those cues to practice a controlled defensive break without contact.
Before you begin

What this lesson is really solving.

Learn flag-style defensive stance, leverage, backpedal, break, angle pursuit, and safe flag pulls without diving through a runner. Keep vision on useful body cues and communicate. Contact coverage and tackling are outside this self-guided lesson.

Why this works

Understand the idea before touching the steps.

Defense is controlled leverage: keep help and valuable space where the plan expects them.

Do this

Follow these steps in order.

Take the action in each step; then use the deliverable below to prove the lesson is finished.

  1. 1

Start in balanced alignment based on receiver position, field space, and assigned leverage.

  2. 2

Backpedal or shuffle under control, read the receiver’s hips, turn efficiently, and avoid crossing feet too early.

  3. 3

Play the catch point by tracking hands and ball without grabbing or running through the receiver.

  4. 4

Practice pursuit angles and flag-pull positioning in non-contact games, keeping the head up and body under control.

Worked example

See the standard in context.

Morgan aligns inside a receiver, backpedals at half speed, plants when the receiver breaks outward, and closes to touch a hip flag. A separate angle drill starts five yards inside and behind a jogging runner, aiming for an intercept point rather than trailing directly.

Quality check

Inspect before you move on.

  • No tackling, blocking, head contact, or dangerous diving is included.
  • The defender maintains space and balance through the break.
  • Pursuit angle targets where the runner will be, not where they began.
Make it real

Your deliverable

A mirror, break, coverage, and pursuit circuit using cones and flag-football rules.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Staring only at the quarterback and losing the receiver or taking a direct angle that trails the play.

You’re ready when

Prove it—don’t just recognize it.

You can maintain leverage, transition, and arrive at the catch point under control.
