The idea in everyday life

Create ticket on 64×64 px page: rectangle X 10, Y18, W44, H28. Use no fill and 4 px stroke. Add a short vertical divider from(42, 20)to(42, 44). Open a 192×64 px reference sheet to arrange all three icons.

The idea

Alignment is a relationship to a selected reference, not an instruction to move everything arbitrarily.

Follow along

Align and space the family — guided practice

Build a ticket and organize three icons on a common reference sheet.

Create ticket on 64×64 px page: rectangle X 10, Y18, W44, H28. Use no fill and 4 px stroke. Add a short vertical divider from(42, 20)to(42, 44). Open a 192×64 px reference sheet to arrange all three icons.

  1. 1. Step 1

Draw the ticket rectangle and divider; save club-ticket.svg. Group its parts with Ctrl+G.

You should see: A third original symbol uses the same style.

    Set a reproducible starting state.

  2. 2. Step 2

On a new 192×64 px page import the three SVGs. Keep each icon grouped and size each tile to 64×64 if the import includes a page box; otherwise position using the original tile coordinates plus offsets 0, 64, 128.

You should see: The family occupies three 64 px tiles.

Use editable geometry and explicit values.

  3. 3. Step 3

Use Object > Align and Distribute. Choose Relative to: Page only when centering a single selected icon within its own tile; on the reference sheet preserve the planned offsets.

You should see: Objects align to explicit references.

Check the result against the visual specification.

  4. 4. Step 4

Inspect that stroke widths remain 4 px and each symbol has breathing room. Save club-family.svg.

You should see: The reference sheet reveals inconsistent weight or spacing.

Preserve evidence for the next stage.

Now change one thing

Four 64 px tiles are placed side by side without gaps. What page width is needed?

Your work

What to finish

The reference sheet reveals inconsistent weight or spacing. Save the corresponding source and notes.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Do not substitute a screenshot for the editable SVG.

How can I tell I understand it?

Explain the result, reproduce the procedure, and complete the changed-input check.

1Aligning three icons relative to the whole page puts them on top of each other. Why?
2Five 48 px tiles need a total sheet width in px of what?
