About 20 minutes, plus any extended practice
Supplied materials
- Paper and a pencil; drawing and spoken explanations are welcome. An adult may read directions and options aloud.
- Supplied worked-case record: The number 4.307 is four ones, three tenths, zero hundredths, and seven thousandths.
- All quantities and shape descriptions are supplied in the worked example and questions; no purchase or personal information is needed.
Learn the idea
Decimals extend the base-ten pattern to places smaller than a whole. Each step right is one tenth of the preceding place. Expanded form joins ones, tenths, hundredths, and thousandths as their actual values. A zero holds an absent place so that later digits keep their intended size.
Identify every decimal place and add its value. Read the resulting decimal as a quantity, using trailing zeros when needed to show thousandths. Check by expressing the fractional part as a whole number of thousandths.
Write a zero for an empty place between occupied places. A digit in thousandths is ten times smaller than the same digit in hundredths. Make Ones, Tenths, Hundredths, and Thousandths columns.
- Make Ones, Tenths, Hundredths, and Thousandths columns.
- Follow the worked example. Point to each number or shape feature and say what it tells you.
- Identify every decimal place and add its value.
- Try the question and then the three practice questions. Check your answers and explain any change you make.
