Use the skills in a new task

Make a short complete response demonstrating the four skills in this unit. Use these supplied entry details: telephone, noun, a device for communicating speech over a distance. Explain tele and phon, name its part of speech and write: Their telephone is over there; they’re using it. Explain each homophone. Longer writing targets in optional extensions can be completed in a later session.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Locate the stated root and connect its meaning to the supplied word definition. Check whether the prediction fits.
  • Inspect only the supplied highlighted syllable or word part. Identify its ending and vowel arrangement before blending the entire word.
  • Name the information needed, then locate the matching labeled entry part. Choose the context-appropriate meaning if several exist.
  • Replace the blank with its stated meaning. Use they are to test they’re; otherwise distinguish possession and location.
Compare with a model response

Telephone is a noun for a device that communicates speech over a distance. Tele suggests far and phon sound. Their telephone is over there; they’re using it. Their shows possession, there locates the telephone and they’re expands to they are. The dictionary’s definition supplies meaning; its noun label gives part of speech. I do not choose these homophones by sound alone.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
