Keep a Source’s Meaning When You Use It

Distinguish an exact quotation from a faithful paraphrase.

Supplied materials

  • Original club note by Noor: “We labeled the blue tray for blank paper. We have not labeled the red tray yet.” Practice sentence to use: “We have not labeled the red tray yet.”
  • Paper and pencil; spoken responses are welcome.

Learn the idea

A quotation repeats a source’s exact words and marks them with quotation marks. A paraphrase explains the same meaning in your own wording. Both need a source cue, such as Noor writes or according to Noor’s note, so readers know where the information came from. These supplied practice words can be quoted directly.

Keep time and limits when paraphrasing. Yet means the red tray remains unlabeled at the time of the note; it does not mean nobody will ever label it. “Noor’s note says the red tray is still unlabeled” keeps that meaning. Merely swapping one word while copying the sentence structure is weaker practice than explaining the idea freshly.

  1. Copy the practice sentence exactly and add quotation marks.
  2. Introduce it with Noor writes.
  3. Set the note aside and restate its idea in different wording.
  4. Check that red, unlabeled, and the present-time limit remain accurate.

Quotation: Noor writes, “We have not labeled the red tray yet.” Paraphrase: According to Noor’s note, the red tray is still unlabeled. Both preserve the status at the time of the note.

Which paraphrase preserves the note’s meaning?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

According to Noor’s note, the red tray is still unlabeled.

Still unlabeled preserves not labeled yet. The other choices change the scope, turn a current status into never, or add a missing-paper claim.

Take it further

Replace the note with “We labeled the red tray this morning.” Model paraphrase: “Noor’s note reports that the red tray received its label this morning.” The old still-unlabeled sentence is now inaccurate because the status changed.
