Use the skills in a new task

Make a short complete response demonstrating the four skills in this unit. Correct: The birds runs. Expected: The birds run. Add They are flying to show ongoing action. Write one prose dialogue line: "Look up," Jo said. Then turn it into a speaker-labeled script line without pretending the punctuation forms are identical. Longer writing targets in optional extensions can be completed in a later session.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Check both the given subject number and whether the task asks for run or be. Choose the matching form.
  • Use the supplied referent and the blank’s sentence role. Keep singular and plural distinct.
  • Read the entire verb phrase, including will or is. Identify its time and whether -ing marks continuing action.
  • Identify the displayed form. Separate speech, tag and independent clauses before naming the convention.
Compare with a model response

The birds run. The plural subject birds takes run, not runs. They are flying describes an ongoing present action with are plus -ing. Prose dialogue: "Look up," Jo said. Script: JO: Look up. The prose line uses quotation marks and a tag; the script uses a speaker label. I preserve the spoken words while recognizing that the punctuation structures differ.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
