Learn the idea

An inference combines story details with reasoning. A character trait is a pattern or quality, such as patient or thoughtful. A useful interpretation points to an action rather than only saying “I feel this is true.”

Read this original story: “Lena had finished her paper boat. Omar’s paper tore, and he looked at the empty desk. Lena put her own boat aside, found another sheet, and showed Omar how to make the first fold. They tested both boats in an imaginary lake they drew on paper.”

  1. Read the passage and underline Lena’s actions.
  2. Distinguish an explicit detail from an inference: finding paper is a detail; being helpful is an interpretation.
  3. Choose an action that best supports calling Lena helpful.
  4. Write a sentence using because and that action.
Worked example

See the method in action

“Lena seems helpful because she finds a new sheet and shows Omar the first fold” connects a trait to evidence. “Lena is helpful because boats are nice” does not use her action.

Your turn

Check your reasoning

Which detail best supports the inference that Lena is helpful?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

She puts her boat aside and helps Omar start again.

Lena interrupts her own finished work to get paper and show Omar what to do. That action supports helpfulness more directly than the objects or setting do.

Take it further

Change the ending: Lena says, “I can show the first fold, then you try the next.” Explain how she can help while letting Omar do his own work. Use the new sentence as evidence.
