Supplied materials

  • Paper and a pencil; drawing and spoken explanations are welcome. An adult may read directions and options aloud.
  • Supplied worked-case record: A square is a quadrilateral because it has four sides.
  • All quantities and shape descriptions are supplied in the worked example and questions; no purchase or personal information is needed.

Learn the idea

A quadrilateral has four straight sides. Rectangles, rhombuses, and squares all belong to that broader category. A square can belong to more than one category: it has four equal sides and four right angles. Categories describe attributes, not exclusive boxes that every shape must fit only once.

Read the supplied attributes and identify a category every matching figure must belong to. Use the broad quadrilateral definition first, then add narrower names only when their extra required features are supplied.

Check each category’s required attributes. A shape may belong to both a broad category and one or more narrower categories. Draw a broad Quadrilateral group with narrower categories inside it.

  1. Draw a broad Quadrilateral group with narrower categories inside it.
  2. Follow the worked example. Point to each number or shape feature and say what it tells you.
  3. Read the supplied attributes and identify a category every matching figure must belong to.
  4. Try the question and then the three practice questions. Check your answers and explain any change you make.
Worked example

See the method in action

A square is a quadrilateral because it has four sides. It is also a rectangle because it has four right angles, and a rhombus because its four sides are equal. Calling it a rectangle does not stop it from being a square. Check each category’s required attributes. A shape may belong to both a broad category and one or more narrower categories. Draw a broad Quadrilateral group with narrower categories inside it.

Quadrilateral

Rectangles have four straight sides.

Take it further

Explain why a nonsquare rectangle is still a quadrilateral. Expected: it has four sides.
