Supplied materials

  • Paper and a pencil; drawing and spoken explanations are welcome. An adult may read directions and options aloud.
  • Supplied worked-case record: The hour hand is between 3 and 4 and the minute hand points to 8.
  • All quantities and shape descriptions are supplied in the worked example and questions; no purchase or personal information is needed.

Learn the idea

The minute hand passes twelve numbered positions in one hour. Each step between neighboring numbers represents five minutes. Multiplying the pointed-to number by five gives the minutes, except twelve marks zero at a new hour. The hour hand still names the hour underway.

Use the stated hour and minute-hand position. Count in fives or multiply the position by five. Write the hour with a two-digit minute field, checking that a half-hour corresponds to position six.

Count dial intervals in fives. Do not read the minute-hand numeral as single minutes. Label clock positions with 5,10,15,...,55 minutes.

  1. Label clock positions with 5,10,15,...,55 minutes.
  2. Follow the worked example. Point to each number or shape feature and say what it tells you.
  3. Use the stated hour and minute-hand position.
  4. Try the question and then the three practice questions. Check your answers and explain any change you make.
Worked example

See the method in action

The hour hand is between 3 and 4 and the minute hand points to 8. Eight groups of five minutes are forty, so the time is 3:40. The hour has not reached four. The numeral eight on the dial is not eight minutes. Count dial intervals in fives. Do not read the minute-hand numeral as single minutes. Label clock positions with 5,10,15,...,55 minutes.
