Expand a Repeating Pattern
Use a repeat instruction to make the same sequence several times.
Supplied materials
- Paper and a pencil, or say your answers aloud.
Learn the idea
A repeat instruction tells us to do a group of steps again. The whole group is repeated, in the same order. It is a shorter way to write a long list of instructions.
“Repeat three times: draw a star, then draw a circle” makes star, circle, star, circle, star, circle. One repetition contains two drawings. Three repetitions contain six drawings.
- Write the group of steps: star, circle.
- Copy the whole group three times in a line.
- Number the drawings from one through six.
- Check the second, fourth, and sixth drawings.
See the method in action
Repeating triangle, square twice gives triangle, square, triangle, square. The repeat applies to both shapes, not only to the square.

a circle
The sequence has six drawings: star, circle, star, circle, star, circle. Every second drawing is a circle, including the sixth.
Take it further
Repeat the same two-shape group four times. There are eight drawings, and the eighth is a circle. Write the full sequence to check.
