Unit review questions
1. Original excerpt A: A hinge permits rotation; a fastener may simply hold two pieces together without permitting that motion. Use excerpt A only. Which technique is supported by the excerpt for introducing the concept?
Need a hint?
  • An analogy clarifies but does not prove equivalence.
  • A near-neighbor contrast should distinguish actual features.
2. Original excerpt B: Question: how many bends were recorded? The supplied Trial Card B reports six. Use excerpt B only. Which relationship between paragraphs is supplied?
Need a hint?
  • For example introduces a case.
  • A consequence claim needs a supporting mechanism or record.
3. Original excerpt C: The panel length is 12 centimeters; the count of 12 alone would not say whether it is a length or count. Use excerpt C only. What precision technique is supported by the excerpt?
Need a hint?
  • Five bends in one trial specifies count and scope.
  • A numerical value without a unit can remain unclear.
4. Original excerpt D: One recorded trial leaves the effect of moisture as a question for another test. Use excerpt D only. Which ending is supported by the excerpt?
Need a hint?
  • An implication should follow from what was explained.
  • A conclusion is not a place to invent a result.

Use the skills in a new task

Make a short complete response demonstrating the four skills in this unit. Write a short explanation of a fictional paper hinge for beginners. Supplied record: paper connects two cardboard panels; bend distance was 2 cm; five bends in one trial; no long-term test. Use a definition, bounded analogy, mechanism, units, scope and a remaining question. Label each paragraph’s role. Longer writing targets in optional extensions can be completed in a later session.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Identify the supplied technique and explain which confusion it addresses. Keep analogy limits explicit.
  • Name the stated relationship and write a transition that makes it visible. Do not use therefore for an unrelated next topic.
  • Use the stated revision and identify which uncertainty it removes. Preserve the supplied record without overclaiming.
  • Compare the ending’s information with the established paragraphs. Identify its connection and whether its implication stays within evidence.
Compare with a model response

Definition: A paper hinge is a movable connection between two cardboard panels. Mechanism: its fold guides the movement while attachments keep the panels joined. This lets their relative angle change. Analogy and limit: it turns somewhat like a joint, but paper is not living tissue and this comparison cannot establish biological repair or durability. Record and remaining question: the supplied bend distance is 2 cm and one trial recorded five bends. Those units, count and single-trial scope are different fields. No long-term test exists; how further bending affects this paper remains a question.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
