Ideas to explain in your own words

Useful vocabulary

Choose a definition technique
An extended explanation can begin with a category, case, distinction or analogy. Choose a technique that helps the stated audience rather than assuming one opening works for every topic.
Explain a paragraph connection
Paragraph cohesion depends on logical relationships as well as repeated words. A transition should accurately connect a general claim, mechanism, question or comparison to its next development.
Develop precision for a reader
Precise explanations define terms, units, category boundaries and scope. These details help readers check a claim and avoid silently merging unlike ideas.
Write an explanatory ending
An explanation can close by synthesizing, acknowledging a question or stating an implication that follows from its content. An unrelated assertion breaks coherence.

Watch your reasoning

A worked review example

Excerpt A: A paper hinge is a movable connection between two cardboard panels. Excerpt B: A crease guides the paper’s bend; because the bend stays at that line, the attached panels can change angle. Excerpt C: Define crease for new readers: a pressed fold line in the paper. Excerpt D: The parts, crease and movement together explain how this model’s hinge works. Choose a definition technique: Evidence: A paper hinge is a movable connection between two cardboard panels. Reasoning: brief category definition is supported because a category and feature define the term directly. A near-neighbor contrast should distinguish actual features. Explain a paragraph connection: Evidence: A crease guides the paper’s bend; because the bend stays at that line, the attached panels can change angle. Reasoning: mechanism to consequence is supported because how the crease guides movement explains the consequent angle change. A consequence claim needs a supporting mechanism or record. Develop precision for a reader: Evidence: Define crease for new readers: a pressed fold line in the paper. Reasoning: defines a specialized term is supported because a new term receives an explanation before repeated use. A numerical value without a unit can remain unclear. Write an explanatory ending: Evidence: The parts, crease and movement together explain how this model’s hinge works. Reasoning: synthesizes the established explanation is supported because parts and motion are gathered into the explanation already developed. A conclusion is not a place to invent a result.

Make a practice plan

  1. Practice choose a definition technique: Identify the supplied technique and explain which confusion it addresses. Keep analogy limits explicit.
  2. Practice explain a paragraph connection: Name the stated relationship and write a transition that makes it visible. Do not use therefore for an unrelated next topic.
  3. Practice develop precision for a reader: Use the stated revision and identify which uncertainty it removes. Preserve the supplied record without overclaiming.
  4. Practice write an explanatory ending: Compare the ending’s information with the established paragraphs. Identify its connection and whether its implication stays within evidence.
  5. Use the new review case without consulting its answer first. Return to the specific lesson if your explanation misses the distinction.
