Study guide: Read Original Notices and Short Messages
A short notice or message is useful when the reader can identify its action, time, place and conditions without inventing extra details. These original supplied records give all facts needed, with glosses for the less familiar vocabulary.
Ideas to explain in your own words
- A notice separates event title, day, time, room and instructions. An answer should use the requested field rather than import a nearby number or assume information that the record never states. Find the question’s target: when, where, required item, audience or cost.
- Negation and sequence words can reverse what a familiar vocabulary item seems to suggest. No rejects a claim; después introduces a later step; empieza and termina distinguish a beginning from an ending. Read the full supplied message before extracting its target.
- A compact menu labels each item and its amount separately. Reading the correct row keeps an item’s price distinct from a nearby entry. These supplied unit prices are fictional, and no purchase or money is involved. Translate the requested item using the full supplied glossary, then find that exact Spanish label in the record.
- Notices may specify restrictions, exceptions or deadlines alongside an event time. Words such as solo, no, antes and hasta alter the allowed or requested action; their scope follows the phrase they modify. Identify which condition the question asks about.
Useful vocabulary
- aviso
- A notice.
- sala
- A room.
- trae
- Bring, in the supplied tú-style instruction.
- cerrado
- Closed.
- solo
- Only, in the supplied restriction.
Watch your reasoning
- All notices are original fictional records. A scheduled event does not prove attendance or satisfaction, and a room number is not an entry price. If a fact is absent, do not fill it with a plausible guess.
- Do not select the first recognizable word automatically. A message can mention an option only to reject it. All quantities and actions are supplied; this task does not require an actual response to the fictional sender.
- Do not assume a familiar item must have a familiar price. The only amounts that matter are in the original supplied menu. A nearby number can be a valid price for another item yet wrong for the requested row.
- A notice does not prove that registration succeeded or a real building is accessible. These tasks only interpret fictional text. Keep an explicit exclusion or deadline instead of combining all mentioned days into one unrestricted schedule.
A worked review example
Extract the Requested Poster Evidence: Original notice: “Taller de dibujo. Lunes, 16:00. Sala 2. Trae un lápiz.” Glosses: taller=workshop; club=club; lectura=reading; dibujo=drawing; música=music; escritura=writing; juegos=games; sala=room; trae=bring; papel=paper; entrada gratis=free entry; para adultos=for adults. When is the workshop? Candidate answers: (A) Monday at 16:00 (B) Monday at 18:00 (C) The time is not stated (D) Tuesday at 16:00. Lunes and 16:00 explicitly identify the workshop time. Use that printed phrase as evidence rather than infer unstated outcomes. Read a Short Message without Losing No: Original message: “Llego a las tres, no a las dos.” Glosses: llego=I arrive; reunión=meeting; mañana=tomorrow; hoy=today; azul=blue; rojo=red; puerta=door; ventana=window; abierta=open; cerrada=closed; después=afterward; empieza=starts; termina=ends; necesito=I need; cuadernos=notebooks; puedo=I can. Identify the stated arrival time. Candidate answers: (A) Four (B) One (C) Three (D) Two. The contrast no a las dos rejects two; a las tres states three. Preserve negation and the relationship between the target word and its clause. Locate a Fictional Menu Row: Original fictional menu, amounts in practice units: Agua:2. Pan:3. Fruta:4. Glossary: agua=water; pan=bread; fruta=fruit; té=tea; leche=milk; arroz=rice; sopa=soup; ensalada=salad; jugo=juice; pasta=pasta. What listed amount belongs to water? Candidate answers: (A) 1 unit (B) 2 units (C) 4 units (D) 9 units. Match water to its Spanish glossary label, then read that label’s colon entry in “Agua:2. Pan:3. Fruta:4.”. The stated amount is 2 units. No addition or assumption about real prices is needed. Separate a Condition from an Event Detail: Original fictional notice: “Biblioteca abierta de lunes a viernes. Cerrada el sábado.” Glosses: abierta=open; cerrada=closed; solo=only; lectura=reading; juegos=games; adultos=adults; niños=children; gratis=free; antes=before; otra=other; inscripción=registration; hasta=until. Identify the stated Saturday. Candidate answers: (A) Closed (B) Its Saturday status is unstated (C) Open (D) Open only after midnight. Cerrada el sábado explicitly states Saturday closure. Keep this condition separate from the other printed information.
Make a practice plan
- Read the supplied Spanish, using the stated English glosses instead of guessing unknown words.
- Work the four lessons in order; mark grammatical evidence before selecting an answer.
- Complete the distinct review and write all four parts of the supplied transfer task.
- Compare your writing with the model, explain any correction, then attempt the separate unit exam.
