Study guide: Inheritance probabilities and their limits
Use an explicit simple inheritance model to infer possibilities and assess probabilistic outcomes.
Ideas to explain in your own words
- Distinguish model probabilities from a guaranteed number of offspring.
- Use an offspring genotype to rule out a parent possibility.
- Calculate a short sequence probability under explicit independence.
- Interpret a small sample without treating probability as a quota.
Watch your reasoning
- The Pp parent contributes P or p equally; the pp parent always contributes p. Half the combinations are Pp and half are pp, so white has probability 1/2. This is a chance per offspring, not an exact family count.
- A Pp offspring could arise from either PP × pp or Pp × pp. One purple observation does not distinguish those parent possibilities.
- Both requires white on the first and second outcomes, so (1/2)(1/2) = 1/4.
- Expectation is a long-run average under the model. A particular sample need not match it exactly.
A worked review example
Use a simple allele probability model: Pp × Pp gives PP, Pp, pP and pp. Three of four combinations contain P, so purple has probability 3/4 and white has probability 1/4 under this model. Infer a Model Parent from an Offspring: A pp offspring needs p from the unknown purple parent. PP cannot provide p. Because the parent is purple, pp is excluded too; Pp is the remaining genotype in this exact model. Combine Independent Offspring Chances: Both white: 1/4. Exactly one white: 1/2. At least one white: 3/4. These events differ, so label the event before calculating. Compare Expected and Observed Counts: Expected white count is 3. Observed count is 4, with proportion 4/12 = 1/3. A sample proportion can differ from the model’s 1/4 probability because outcomes vary.
