Use the skills in a new task

Make a short complete response demonstrating the four skills in this unit. Rewrite this idea three ways without changing meaning: Jo chose the cautious route because the bridge was untested. Give the main point first, delay it and use two balanced causally linked clauses. Explain the tone difference between thrifty and stingy, and use decide and decision in correctly formed sentences. Longer writing targets in optional extensions can be completed in a later session.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Find the main clause and compare its position with additional phrases or clauses. Explain the stated emphasis effect.
  • Use the stated word and context, then distinguish its nuance from the other supplied meanings.
  • Compare the supplied original and derived forms in their stated roles. Explain how the ending changes their sentence job.
  • Identify the entry label and the type of information it provides. Use current context for the intended sense.
Compare with a model response

Main point first: Jo chose the cautious route because the bridge was untested. Delayed main point: Because the bridge was untested, Jo chose the cautious route. Balanced arrangement: The bridge was untested, and for that reason Jo chose the cautious route. Both linked clauses retain the original fact and causal choice; no speed preference is added. Thrifty suggests careful economy; stingy suggests unhelpful unwillingness to share under the supplied context. Jo will decide uses a verb. Jo's decision is cautious uses the related noun. Historical origin information does not replace the current contextual definition.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
