Study guide: Repair and Test Paper Rules
Improve drawing instructions, sort by a stated property and track inputs and outputs.
Ideas to explain in your own words
- Test a short algorithm and add the step needed for its stated goal.
- Replace an unclear location with a testable drawing instruction.
- Apply a shape rule while ignoring a feature the rule does not use.
- Apply the same paper rule separately to two starting pictures.
Watch your reasoning
- The triangle is already drawn. The missing part is one dot inside it, so adding that precise step makes the algorithm meet its goal.
- The instruction names both the number and the required position. Inside and below are precise but do not match this goal.
- A square is not a triangle. The rule sends every other shape to O; green is not part of the condition.
- The input supplies 3 dots and the rule adds 1, making 4. Starting fresh prevents carrying over another row’s result.
A worked review example
Find a Missing Instruction: Repaired algorithm: 1. Draw a square. 2. Draw one dot inside the square. 3. Stop. Testing all three steps produces the stated goal. Make an Instruction Precise: The revised drawing has one circle and one dot below it. A dot inside the circle has the right count but the wrong location, so checking only the count would miss the problem. Sort with One Clear Rule: T contains red triangle and blue triangle: 2 cards. O contains blue circle and red square: 2 cards. The colors do not change these results. Track an Input and Its Output: Input 2 dots → add 1 → output 3 dots. Input 4 dots → add 1 → output 5 dots. Row B starts with four, not the three dots left by row A.
Make a practice plan
- Try the supplied lesson problems without looking at the answers.
- Compare your method with the worked examples and explain any correction.
- Use the new review cases, then complete the transfer task on paper or in your own document.
