Learn the idea

Physical features are parts of the natural landscape; human features are built or arranged by people. A mountain and coast are physical features. A road and bridge are human features. People can alter landscapes, so the distinction describes the feature we are examining, not an untouched world.

Mountain: a high natural landform. Coast: land beside a sea or ocean. Road: a built route for travel. Bridge: a structure carrying a route across an obstacle.

Find the feature described: a mountain, a coast, a road or a bridge. Ask an adult to read the notes and cards aloud. Point, draw or say your answer.

  1. Ask an adult to read the four notes. Find the words Mountain, Coast, Road, Bridge.
  2. Find the feature described: a mountain, a coast, a road or a bridge.
  3. Read the worked answer. Then try the other cards and explain which words helped you choose.
  4. Point to, draw or say two different examples: one for Mountain and one for Coast. Explain how their clues differ.
Worked example

Worked example: The card says: “A fictional view shows a high rocky peak.” That matches Mountain. Mountain is a high natural landform. Compare the note for Road: Road is a built route for travel. That is a different clue.
