Supplied materials

  • Paper or a text document; all cases below are original fictional learning inputs.
  • An adult may read aloud; drawing or spoken answers are valid. No personal health information or physical performance is required.
  • The rule is point-rest-point-rest. It contains two repeats of point-rest, with four cards total. The rest cards are part of the pattern, not mistakes to erase. A strip reading point-point-rest-rest uses the same cards but breaks the alternating order. A learner can show understanding by drawing the four cards and circling each pair.
  • The rule is tap-wave repeated twice. Which strip fits?
  • The rule is wave-tap repeated twice. Which strip fits?
  • The rule is point-rest repeated twice. Which strip fits?
  • The instruction names tap and wave but gives no order. What fits?
  • The instruction begins wave, then tap, and repeats that pair. Which strip fits?
  • The instruction says rest belongs after each point. Which strip fits?

Learn the idea

A repeating pattern has a part that returns in the same order. In this paper activity, tap-wave is one pair. Two repeats are tap-wave-tap-wave. A pause can be part of a pattern if the rule says so.

Use a finger on paper or draw the cards. Check the action types and their order, then count repeats. A pattern is not correct just because it has the right number of cards; reversed pairs follow a different rule.

No tapping or waving is required. If a comfortable seated version is chosen, use an adult-approved clear space and a stop cue. Different ways of showing the same order are equally valid for this knowledge task.

  1. Read or listen to the pretend story. Point to the details the question gives you.
  2. Read the action rule, draw one group, then copy the whole group the requested number of times. Check both order and count.
  3. Check your answer against the example. Say what matches and what you would change.
  4. Try the practice questions, then the extra task. Drawing or spoken answers are welcome.

The rule is point-rest-point-rest. It contains two repeats of point-rest, with four cards total. The rest cards are part of the pattern, not mistakes to erase. A strip reading point-point-rest-rest uses the same cards but breaks the alternating order. A learner can show understanding by drawing the four cards and circling each pair.

Helpful tips
  • The same cards in a different order can break the rule.
  • A planned rest is part of the pattern.
Keep a repeating movement pattern: The rule is tap-wave repeated twice. Which strip fits?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

Tap-wave-tap-wave follows two repeats of tap-wave.

Each pair begins tap and ends wave.

Take it further

Draw tap-rest three times. Expected: tap-rest-tap-rest-tap-rest, six cards with three rest cards.
