These projections use your selected assumptions. Markets fluctuate and investments can lose value. Taxes, investment fees, and inflation can reduce actual results.

Start now. Or start later.

Starting earlier gives compounding more time. Starting later can still make a meaningful difference.

Each comparison begins with the same starting balance and first monthly contribution. While waiting, that balance earns no modeled return and no contributions are made. Annual contribution increases begin when investing starts. Differences include both fewer contributions and less time for growth.

Starting now produces $397,989 more in projected ending value than waiting ten years under these assumptions.

How this works

You contribute. Returns can compound.

When investments grow, future returns can apply to earlier gains as well as to money you add. Losses can also compound. This model spreads one return assumption evenly across months; real markets do not behave that smoothly.

Time & contributions

More time means more periods for returns to compound. Consistent contributions add new principal. Neither time nor consistency removes investment risk.

Return methodology

Annual return is an effective yearly rate. Monthly rate = (1 + annual return / 100)^(1/12) − 1, so 7% means 7% growth over one year before contributions. Contributions arrive at month-end.

Inflation

Future-dollar balances are divided by (1 + annual inflation) raised to the number of years. This estimates purchasing power in today’s dollars. It is separate from the nominal investment value.

Goal calculation

We calculate growth from the starting balance, then solve the recurring contribution needed to fill the gap. Annual increases are included, and the first monthly contribution is rounded up to the next cent. A target already met under the model needs no additional contribution.

Risk, fees & taxes

These are smooth mathematical scenarios. Actual returns vary; capital can be lost. No taxes, investment fees, contribution limits, withdrawals, or individual circumstances are modeled. The tool does not recommend a security or account.

Rule of 72

As a rough shortcut, 72 ÷ 7% is about 10.3 years to double a lump sum. This is an approximation, works best with modest positive rates, and ignores additional contributions.
