How to Set Exposure in Manual Mode

From Adorama · Master Your Craft. Watch here or open it on YouTube .

Follow the manual-exposure demonstration by predicting what will change before each adjustment; verify motion, depth, and noise rather than chasing a centered meter.
Before you begin

What this lesson is really solving.

Choose exposure based on motion, depth of field, noise tolerance, and highlight protection. In manual mode, set the creative constraints first, then balance remaining variables. Choose focus mode and point based on whether the subject is still or moving.

Why this works

Understand the idea before touching the steps.

Shutter controls motion, aperture controls depth and light, ISO amplifies the signal, and focus chooses the sharp plane.

Do this

Follow these steps in order.

Take the action in each step; then use the deliverable below to prove the lesson is finished.

  1. 1

Set shutter speed first when motion blur or camera shake is the main risk.

  2. 2

Choose aperture for the depth of field and lens performance the scene needs.

  3. 3

Raise ISO only as needed for the shutter and aperture decision, checking noise and highlight headroom.

  4. 4

Select the correct focus mode and point behavior, then verify critical sharpness at useful magnification.

Worked example

See the standard in context.

For still hands, Kai uses 1/250 second to freeze motion, f/2.8 for separation, and raises ISO until the histogram protects highlights. For video at 24 fps, shutter stays near 1/50 while aperture, light, ISO, and neutral-density filtration manage exposure.

Quality check

Inspect before you move on.

  • Shutter renders motion as intended and focus is on the meaningful plane.
  • Critical highlights are not accidentally clipped.
  • Settings are tested at full magnification, not trusted from a small preview.
Make it real

Your deliverable

A controlled series showing frozen motion, intentional blur, shallow depth, and deep focus.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Using the lowest ISO at the cost of a shutter speed that creates an unusably blurred image.

You’re ready when

Prove it—don’t just recognize it.

You can choose which technical compromise best protects the creative priority.
