Compose with intent
Arrange subject, background, edges, scale, and viewpoint to direct attention.
How to Set Exposure in Manual Mode
From Adorama · Master Your Craft. Watch here or open it on YouTube .
After setting a technically correct exposure, compare how framing changes the story even when camera settings stay constant. What this lesson is really solving.
Decide what the image is about, then remove or reposition anything that competes. Explore distance, height, lens choice, foreground, negative space, line, and moment. Rules of thirds can prompt variation, but the subject and intended feeling should decide.
Understand the idea before touching the steps.
Composition is subtraction plus hierarchy: decide what matters and remove competition.
Follow these steps in order.
Take the action in each step; then use the deliverable below to prove the lesson is finished.
- 1
Name the subject and emotional point before raising the camera.
- 2
Scan all four frame edges, background mergers, bright distractions, and empty space.
- 3
Change your position and focal length before cropping; make wide, medium, and detail versions.
- 4
Use lines, repetition, layers, symmetry, imbalance, and negative space only when they strengthen the idea.
See the standard in context.
Kai makes a wide frame showing the studio, a medium frame connecting hands and wheel, and a close detail of clay texture. A bright exit sign is removed by shifting position, not retouching. The sequence now establishes place, action, and material.
Inspect before you move on.
- The viewer can name the subject and relationship quickly.
- Edges and background are inspected before capture.
- Variation comes from purposefully different information, not random zooming.
Your deliverable
A nine-frame composition study using three viewpoints and three shot sizes.
Watch for this
Applying the rule of thirds automatically when another placement better supports the subject.
Prove it—don’t just recognize it.
You can explain what the viewer notices first, second, and third—and why.
Quick knowledge check
Answer from the lesson—not from confidence alone. Score at least 2 of 3 to unlock completion.
This curriculum-aligned check is scored automatically and stored with your account when signed in. It is an objective learning signal, but it has not yet been independently validated as a standardized assessment.
