Decide what the image is about, then remove or reposition anything that competes. Explore distance, height, lens choice, foreground, negative space, line, and moment. Rules of thirds can prompt variation, but the subject and intended feeling should decide.
Composition means arranging the picture. Decide what viewers should notice first, then move or remove distractions.

Use the sample or information you have permission to use. Keep your work as you go. You can pause between steps.

Name the subject and emotional point before raising the camera.

Scan all four frame edges, background mergers, bright distractions, and empty space.

Change your position and focal length before cropping; make wide, medium, and detail versions.

Use lines, repetition, layers, symmetry, imbalance, and negative space only when they strengthen the idea.
