A rough expectation makes an impossible or misplaced decimal easier to catch.
Keep units attached
Dollars, hours, people, miles, pounds, and percentages tell you what an answer actually means.
Check the decision, not just the arithmetic
A correct calculation can still use the wrong data, timeframe, assumption, or policy.
Key terms worth knowing.
- Rate
- A comparison of quantities with different units, such as dollars per hour or units per minute.
- Ratio
- A relationship between quantities that can be compared, scaled, or simplified.
- Percentage
- A proportion expressed out of one hundred, useful for comparing changes or shares.
- Reasonableness check
- A quick estimate, alternate method, unit check, or comparison that tests whether a result makes sense.
