  • Write units beside every number and mark any assumption that would need confirmation in a real setting.

Working vocabulary

Key terms worth knowing.

Rate
A comparison of quantities with different units, such as dollars per hour or units per minute.
Ratio
A relationship between quantities that can be compared, scaled, or simplified.
Percentage
A proportion expressed out of one hundred, useful for comparing changes or shares.
Reasonableness check
A quick estimate, alternate method, unit check, or comparison that tests whether a result makes sense.
