From Jr. NBA. Watch here or open it on YouTube .

Use the dribble primer's stance as the base of the shot and watch whether the ball arrives under control before the upward motion begins.
Before you begin

What this lesson is really solving.

Start close enough that force does not distort the motion. Align feet comfortably, set the ball consistently, keep the shooting hand behind or under it, finish toward the target, and hold balance. Move back only after a stable make pattern.

Why this works

Understand the idea before touching the steps.

A shot is one coordinated chain from floor to fingertips; distance comes from efficient force, not a violent arm motion.

Do this

Follow these steps in order.

Take the action in each step; then use the deliverable below to prove the lesson is finished.

  1. 1

Start close with balanced feet, shooting-side alignment, relaxed grip, ball under control, and eyes on a consistent target.

  2. 2

Drive smoothly through legs and torso into one-hand release while the guide hand stays quiet.

  3. 3

Hold the finish and diagnose misses by direction and depth instead of changing everything at once.

  4. 4

Earn distance only after making a consistent percentage from the current spot with the same form.

Worked example

See the standard in context.

Taylor shoots five one-hand form shots from three close spots, adds the guide hand without pushing, then records 25 attempts. At 18 makes with balanced finishes, Taylor takes one small step back; below the threshold, the distance stays unchanged.

Quality check

Inspect before you move on.

  • The guide hand does not add side force.
  • The finish is balanced and repeatable on makes and misses.
  • Distance increases by evidence, not embarrassment about practicing close.
Make it real

Your deliverable

A five-spot close-range form routine with makes, miss pattern, and one technical focus logged.

Common mistake

Watch for this

Practicing three-pointers before close-range mechanics and lower-body timing can support the distance.

You’re ready when

Prove it—don’t just recognize it.

Your close shot has repeatable balance, release, arc, and miss pattern across multiple sessions.
