Study guide: Families and Time
Describe care, change and the order of everyday events.
Ideas to explain in your own words
- Families can include different people and live in different homes. A family is not defined by one size or one set of jobs. Children need care, and people can share that work. Our fictional examples are possibilities, not rules for every family.
- Time words help describe change. Before means earlier than the time we are discussing. Now means the present moment. Later means after now. A repeated activity happens again; it is not the same as saying the clock has moved backward.
- People grow and learn over time. A photograph can show what was in front of the camera at one moment. A memory is what someone recalls. Neither a photo nor a memory shows every part of a person’s day, so we ask simple questions about each.
- A sequence tells what happened first, next and last. Pictures can be arranged to show a day. The order must follow the supplied story, not a guess about every household. Different families can follow different routines.

Watch your reasoning
- Mixing up Care and Play. Re-read what each note says before choosing.
- Adding a detail that is not on the card. Point to the words that help explain your answer.
A worked review example
Worked example: The card says: “A fictional adult prepares food for a child.” That matches Care. Care is helping someone meet a need. Compare the note for Rest: Rest is giving the body a break. That is a different clue.
Make a practice plan
- Read or listen to the notes in the four lessons. An adult can read aloud.
- Try each lesson’s main question and three practice questions. Say, draw or write what helped you choose.
- Use the review cards, then try the changed card in any lesson you want to practice again.
- Complete the four-box task. Then try the separate subject-test cards.
