Review: Weather records and careful claims

Read, sort, compare, and explain a small weather record.

Bring the unit skills together

Use these 4 new cases to check your reasoning. Choices are temporary and are not saved to an account, sent to staff or recorded as school grades. Download your current review choices before leaving or reloading.

Unit review questions
1. A new record says Monday cloudy, Tuesday sunny, Wednesday cloudy, Thursday cloudy. How many entries say cloudy?
2. A record has day A rainy, day B sunny, day C rainy. Which group contains A and C?
3. At one place, morning is cloudy and afternoon is sunny. What does the pair show?
4. A note says “Sunday sunny.” There is no Monday note. Which claim is supported?

Use the skills in a new task

Make a spoken or drawn weather message from these fictional noon notes: day 1 rainy, day 2 cloudy, day 3 rainy. Group and count the labels. Add this separate pair: day 3 morning cloudy, day 3 noon rainy. Say what changed and what you cannot know about day 4.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Use all three noon notes.
  • Count two rainy and one cloudy noon entries.
  • Explain that day 3 morning and noon labels differ.
  • Say there is no observation of day 4.
Compare with a model response

My noon groups are rainy: days 1 and 3, two entries; cloudy: day 2, one entry. Day 3 changes from cloudy in the morning to rainy at noon. There is no day 4 note, so I cannot say for certain what its weather will be.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
