Unit review questions
1. Target: fun. Long word: tiger. Short word: wet. Change win: replace /w/ with /p/. Which supplied word rhymes with the target word?
Need a hint?
  • Stretch the vowel and ending.
  • A matching first sound alone is not a rhyme.
2. Target: fun. Long word: tiger. Short word: wet. Change win: replace /w/ with /p/. How many spoken syllables are in the supplied long word?
Need a hint?
  • Say the whole word before clapping.
  • Two letters can make one vowel sound.
3. Target: fun. Long word: tiger. Short word: wet. Change win: replace /w/ with /p/. Which sound ends the supplied short word?
Need a hint?
  • Listen after the vowel.
  • Say /m/, not the letter name em.
4. Target: fun. Long word: tiger. Short word: wet. Change win: replace /w/ with /p/. After the stated first-sound change, what is the new word?
Need a hint?
  • Keep the middle and ending unchanged.
  • Do not add the new sound before the old first sound.

Use the skills in a new task

Make a short complete response demonstrating the four skills in this unit. With adult help, say two words that rhyme with bed, clap the beats in picnic, say the last sound in cup, and replace /b/ in bat with /k/. Expected: examples red and fed; two beats; /p/; cat. Longer writing targets in optional extensions can be completed in a later session.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Say the target and each choice aloud. Listen to the end of each word, rather than looking only at the first letter.
  • An adult says the word normally, then slowly. Repeat it and make one gentle clap for each beat.
  • Say the short word without adding an extra vowel after a consonant. Then repeat just the sound at the end.
  • Say the original word, remove its first sound and attach the new first sound. Blend the complete new word.
Compare with a model response

Red and fed rhyme with bed because their vowel and ending sounds match. Picnic has two spoken beats: pic-nic. Cup ends in /p/. Replacing the first /b/ in bat with /k/ gives cat. I keep /a/ and /t/ unchanged and blend /k/ /a/ /t/. An adult can model the sounds without adding an extra vowel after each consonant.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
