Unit review questions
1. A ten-frame has 6 filled spaces. How many more spaces must be filled to make ten?
Need a hint?
  • A full ten-frame has exactly ten spaces.
  • Count empty spaces for the missing partner, not filled spaces again.
2. Split 9 marks into two parts. The first part has 2. How many are in the other part?
Need a hint?
  • Circle the first part before counting the rest.
  • Do not change the whole while trying a new split.
3. A whole has 3 marks and 1 is visible. How many are hidden?
Need a hint?
  • Draw the known whole first.
  • The hidden amount is only the missing part, not the whole group.
4. Fill the blank: 2 + 3 = 1 + __.
Need a hint?
  • Build each side separately before comparing.
  • Different parts can have equal totals.

Use the skills in a new task

Draw ten spaces. Fill six and label the four empty spaces. Then show two different splits of eight.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Draw or label the numbers or shape features the task gives you.
  • Say why each calculation or shape choice follows the ideas in this unit.
  • Check that your answer fits the story or drawing in the task.
Compare with a model response

Six filled spaces need four more to fill ten. Eight can split into 3 and 5 or into 2 and 6; both pairs still contain eight marks.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
