Follow right and up arrows one move at a time.
Supplied materials
- Paper and pencil; an adult may read aloud. No device, account or purchase is needed.
Learn the idea
A paper robot is a mark that moves only when an instruction says to move. Draw a square grid with three columns and three rows. Number columns 1, 2, 3 from left to right and rows 1, 2, 3 from bottom to top. An adult can help draw and label the grid.
Start in the bottom-left square, called column 1, row 1. In this lesson RIGHT means move to the next square to the right; UP means move to the next square above. Follow RIGHT, UP, RIGHT. Mark a dot after each move so that you can see the route instead of guessing the end.
- Draw the grid and put a paper mark at column 1, row 1.
- Move RIGHT and mark column 2, row 1.
- Move UP, then RIGHT, marking each new square.
- Say the final column and row; keep the mark inside the grid.
See the method in action
The route is (column 1, row 1) → (2, 1) → (2, 2) → (3, 2). The robot ends in column 3, row 2 after three moves.

Column 2, row 2
UP reaches column 1, row 2. RIGHT then reaches column 2, row 2. A move changes only the direction named in its instruction.
Take it further
Add a second UP after UP, RIGHT. Expected route: (1, 1) → (1, 2) → (2, 2) → (2, 3); finish in column 2, row 3.
