Supplied materials

  • Paper and pencil; drawing or spoken answers are welcome.
  • Topic notes: Town: a local settlement. State: one of the United States’ member political areas. Country: a nation such as the United States. Continent: a very large land region such as North America.
  • Original exercise cards: Fictional Oak Town is a small settlement within a state. / Maryland is one member of the United States. / The United States is named as a nation. / North America includes several countries. / California is one member of the United States. / Canada is named as a nation. / Africa is a very large land region. / A local settlement has homes and streets.

Learn the idea

Places can be part of larger places. In our example, a town is within a state, and the state is within the United States. A continent is a very large land region. A town, state, country and continent are different kinds of places, not four names for one government.

Town: a local settlement. State: one of the United States’ member political areas. Country: a nation such as the United States. Continent: a very large land region such as North America.

Find whether the card describes a town, a state, a country or a continent. Ask an adult to read the notes and cards aloud. Point, draw or say your answer.

  1. Ask an adult to read the four notes. Find the words Town, State, Country, Continent.
  2. Find whether the card describes a town, a state, a country or a continent.
  3. Read the worked answer. Then try the other cards and explain which words helped you choose.
  4. Point to, draw or say two different examples: one for Town and one for State. Explain how their clues differ.

Worked example: The card says: “Fictional Oak Town is a small settlement within a state.” That matches Town. Town is a local settlement. Compare the note for Country: Country is a nation such as the United States. That is a different clue.
