Supplied materials

  • Paper and a pencil; drawing and spoken explanations are welcome. An adult may read directions and options aloud.
  • Supplied worked-case record: Box A contains no beads and Box B contains one bead.
  • All quantities and shape descriptions are supplied in the worked example and questions; no purchase or personal information is needed.

Learn the idea

Zero is a number for a group with no objects. An empty box may take up space on the paper, but that space is not an object to count. Read zero and write its numeral, 0, beside the empty group.

Look only at objects inside the stated group. If there are none, write 0. Contrast the empty group with a one-object group so that zero and one do not get mixed up.

Name what is being counted before counting. An empty container is not one item of its missing contents. Draw an empty group and a group with one object beside it.

  1. Draw an empty group and a group with one object beside it.
  2. Follow the worked example. Point to each number or shape feature and say what it tells you.
  3. Look only at objects inside the stated group.
  4. Try the question and then the three practice questions. Check your answers and explain any change you make.
Worked example

See the method in action

Box A contains no beads and Box B contains one bead. The counts are A: 0 and B: 1. The box outlines are not beads. Zero describes the empty bead group, while one describes the group with a bead. Name what is being counted before counting. An empty container is not one item of its missing contents. Draw an empty group and a group with one object beside it.
