Supplied materials

  • Paper and a pencil; drawing and spoken explanations are welcome. An adult may read directions and options aloud.
  • Supplied worked-case record: Fill 7 spaces in a ten-frame.
  • All quantities and shape descriptions are supplied in the worked example and questions; no purchase or personal information is needed.

Learn the idea

A ten-frame has two rows of five spaces. Filling some spaces makes the missing amount visible. The filled and empty spaces together always make ten. Finding the partner is different from counting only the filled spaces.

Draw two rows of five boxes and fill the stated number. Count the empty boxes. Record a sentence saying filled amount plus missing amount makes ten, and check that every space is used exactly once.

A full ten-frame has exactly ten spaces. Count empty spaces for the missing partner, not filled spaces again. Draw two rows of five spaces, then shade the supplied number.

  1. Draw two rows of five spaces, then shade the supplied number.
  2. Follow the worked example. Point to each number or shape feature and say what it tells you.
  3. Draw two rows of five boxes and fill the stated number.
  4. Try the question and then the three practice questions. Check your answers and explain any change you make.
Worked example

See the method in action

Fill 7 spaces in a ten-frame. Three remain empty, so 7 + 3 = 10. You can see five filled spaces in the first row and two in the second. Filling the last three spaces finishes the frame without adding an eleventh space. A full ten-frame has exactly ten spaces. Count empty spaces for the missing partner, not filled spaces again. Draw two rows of five spaces, then shade the supplied number.
