Match a Helper to a Task

Use a stated role to decide who handles a pretend group task.

Supplied materials

  • Original fictional puppet group: Ara is the card sorter, who puts pictures in matching trays. Dev is the turn caller, who says whose turn comes next. Ivo is the drawing helper, who holds the shared paper steady when asked. Nobody has to perform these jobs in real life.

Learn the idea

A role is an agreed job in a group. We match a task to the job described, rather than guessing from a person’s name. Roles can help a group know whom to ask. A helper role does not mean that person is more important than everyone else or must do every task.

Our puppet group names three different jobs. When cards are mixed, the sorter’s job matches that problem. When the group forgets the order, the turn caller’s job matches. Read or hear the job description before choosing. The group can agree to exchange jobs later, so roles are not permanent traits of the characters.

  1. Ask an adult to read the three jobs.
  2. Say “cards,” “turns,” and “paper” and match each word to its helper.
  3. Pretend the cards are mixed; name the matching helper.
  4. Explain your choice using the helper’s job, not their name alone.

“Ara can sort the mixed cards because Ara’s job is putting pictures in matching trays. Dev’s turn job answers a different problem.”

The group asks who comes next. Whose stated role matches?

See the answer and explanation

Dev, the turn caller.

Dev’s job is saying whose turn comes next. The other descriptions concern sorting and holding paper.

Take it further

Changed roles: Ara becomes turn caller and Dev becomes sorter. Who now names the next turn? Model reasoning: “Ara, because the job changed. I use today’s role description instead of remembering yesterday’s name.”
