Match Groups to Find More

Compare two groups by matching each object with one partner.

Supplied materials

  • A trusted adult to read aloud; paper and pencil are optional.
  • Supplied groups: five drawn leaves and three drawn flowers.

Learn the idea

A group can look bigger because its drawings are spread out. Matching tells us about the number instead. Put one leaf beside one flower, then another leaf beside another flower. Each drawing gets only one partner.

When every flower has a leaf partner, any leaves left over show that the leaf group has more. If nothing is left over in either group, the groups have the same number. Ask an adult to read while you point or tell your thinking.

  1. Draw five leaves and three flowers, or have an adult draw them.
  2. Connect each flower to a different leaf; stop when the flowers run out.
  3. Count the two leaves with no partner and name the group with more.
Worked example

See the method in action

Five leaves match three flowers in three pairs. Two leaves have no flower partner: 5 − 3 = 2. There are more leaves, even if the flower drawings are larger.

Your turn

Check your reasoning

Your answer is temporary and is not saved to an account. Download your current answer before leaving or reloading. Written work on paper or in another app stays in your own file.

An adult draws four moons and six stars. Which group has more drawings?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

Stars

Four moons can match four stars. Two stars remain without a moon partner, so six stars is more than four moons.

Take it further

Change the star group to four stars. Now four moons match four stars with nothing left over, so the two groups have the same number. Move one group farther apart and check again.
