Read a record in its context

Use a creator’s role and purpose to interpret what a source can establish.

Supplied materials

  • Original fictional records about the 1930 Willow market: a stall-owner flyer says “The busiest market in the region!” A clerk’s notebook lists 40 stalls rented. A visitor’s letter says “I waited ten minutes to buy bread.”
  • These invented sources practice historical reasoning; no real 1930 event is asserted.

Learn the idea

A source’s creator and purpose help explain its language and coverage. An advertisement tries to attract customers; a rental record tracks a transaction; a letter describes one person’s experience.

Purpose does not automatically make a source false. It helps you ask what evidence is missing. A superlative such as “busiest” needs a defined measure and comparisons with other markets.

  1. Label each source’s creator and likely purpose.
  2. Identify which source directly records stall rentals.
  3. Distinguish the flyer’s comparative claim from the letter’s single observation.
  4. Write what further evidence would be needed to compare regional busyness.
Worked example

See the method in action

The notebook supports a count of 40 stalls rented, assuming the record is complete. The flyer’s “busiest” claim would need comparable attendance or trade data from other markets; a bread queue alone cannot provide that.

Your turn

Check your reasoning

Which question most directly checks the flyer’s claim?

Feedback appears here after you check. This is practice, not a graded school assessment.

See the answer and explanation

What measure of busyness was used, and how did other regional markets compare?

A regional ranking requires both a measure and comparison cases. The other questions do not test the advertised superlative.

Take it further

Rewrite the flyer to make one narrower claim supported by the notebook. Explain why “40 stalls rented” differs from “40 stalls open all day.”
