Study guide: Real Roots and Approximation

Roots reverse powers, but their exact values and decimal approximations must be distinguished. Integer squares provide reliable bounds, and odd roots retain negative signs while principal square roots are nonnegative.

A worked review example

Complete supplied guide examples: Bracket a Square Root between Integer Squares — Between which consecutive whole numbers is √5? Candidate answers: (A) 1 and 2 (B) 2 and 3 (C) 3 and 4 (D) 4 and 5. 2²=4<5, while 3²=9>5. The positive square root therefore lies strictly between 2 and 3. Distinguish Rational and Irrational Values — Which supplied value, among fractions, repeating decimals and roots of 4 or 5, is irrational? Candidate answers: (A) 0.222… with the block 2 repeating (B) 2/4 (C) √4 (D) √5. 5 lies between consecutive integer squares, so √5 is not a rational number. A fraction, a repeating decimal and the square root of a perfect square are rational. Round a Root after Locating It — Approximate √6 to the nearest tenth; a calculator may be used. Candidate answers: (A) 2 (B) 2.4 (C) 3 (D) 4.4. The exact root lies between 2 and 3. Its decimal value is approximately 2.449490; rounding the hundredths place gives 2.4. Use the Sign of an Odd Power — Find the real cube root of −8. Candidate answers: (A) -2 (B) -4 (C) -8 (D) 2. Because (−2)³=−8, the cube root is −2. Odd powers preserve the sign, unlike even powers.

Make a practice plan

  1. Study the four methods in the listed order; attempt each independent check before opening its explanation.
  2. Complete each lesson’s three changed-input questions and record the operation or reasoning step behind any correction.
  3. Take the four-question unit review, then solve the transfer task with written justifications.
  4. After correcting errors, attempt the separate unit exam and revisit the linked lesson for any unresolved method.
