Unit review questions
1. A temperature starts at −3 °C, rises 8 °C, then falls 7 °C. Where does it finish?
2. What is (−6) × 4?
3. What is (−35) ÷ 5?
4. Solve −5 + 2x = 9.

Use the skills in a new task

Track a fictional elevator model; positive is upward. It starts at −2 units, changes +5, then −4. Separately calculate the total change for three intervals of −2 units each and the per-interval change for −12 units over four equal intervals. Finally write and solve the equation for a trip starting at −6 that gains 3 units per interval and ends at 9. Work on paper; no real elevator is involved.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Combine −2 + 5 − 4 to find position −1.
  • Multiply 3 × (−2) to find total change −6.
  • Divide −12 by 4 to find −3 units per interval.
  • Solve −6 + 3x = 9 as x = 5 and check by substitution.
Compare with a model response

The first final position is −1. Three changes of −2 give −6 total, and −12 ÷ 4 = −3 per interval. For the last trip, −6 + 3x = 9 gives 3x = 15, so x = 5. Checking −6 + 3 × 5 = 9 verifies the count.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
