Use the skills in a new task

Make a short complete response demonstrating the four skills in this unit. Correct: Jo and me arrived. Expected: Jo and I arrived. Add an intensive form: I myself checked the plan. Add a nonessential middle detail using paired commas: Jo, our guide, arrived early. Explain wheel:bicycle as part:whole without reversing the relation. Longer writing targets in optional extensions can be completed in a later session.

Work on paper or in your own document. Explain the choices you made.

  • Temporarily remove the other noun in a compound phrase and test the pronoun alone. Restore the full phrase after checking.
  • Try removing the self-form. Check whether it merely emphasizes, receives the action from the same subject or incorrectly replaces me/us.
  • Use the punctuation form explicitly requested, or recognize essential identification. Make sure a removable middle addition has two boundaries.
  • Read both terms and state their relationship in order. Reverse-order analogies may change the relation.
Compare with a model response

Jo and I arrived. Removing Jo leaves I arrived, so I is the subject form. I myself checked the plan uses myself for removable emphasis. Jo, our guide, arrived early uses paired commas for a nonessential addition. Wheel:bicycle is part:whole. I keep the relation’s order; bicycle:wheel reverses it. An object example is Lee helped me, not Lee helped myself.

A different response can also meet the criteria. Compare the evidence and reasoning, rather than copying the wording.
